Iraq’s President Stresses the “Urgent Need” to Ease Tensions in the Region

Iraq’s President Barham Saleh stressed on Tuesday the “urgent need” to ease tensions in the region as he received the credentials of Italy’s new ambassador to Iraq, Maurizio Cricanti, at Al Salam Palace in Baghdad.

“Iraqi-Italian relations are close and important, and must be strengthened in various fields, working together to meet various challenges, particularly the fight against terrorism and extremist ideology, and strengthening economic and cultural cooperation and environmental action,” Salih said, praising Italy’s “supportive role for Iraq”.

“There is an urgent need to ease the tensions in the region and support the course of dialogue in resolving existing differences that will have a positive impact on regional security and stability,” Saleh added.

He further stressed “the importance of Iraq’s central role in the region and the need to ensure its security, stability and sovereignty”.
